As a premier leadership and service
organization, Epsilon Sigma Alpha offers members the personal assistance and supportive programming needed to develop
confidence and competence to impact the world in a positive way. Unlocking the personal challenge that resides within is the
key to success, and ESA gives our members the background and assistance to do just that. Whether your aspirations are career
oriented, volunteer driven or socially motivated, ESA helps you achieve your goals. Our single purpose is to inspire leadership
and service by bringing good people together to pursue programs and projects that make a positive difference locally, nationally
and internationally. Give your life purpose with ESA... we touch the lives of others while changing our own.
Members often note that the letters ESA stand for Education, Service, and Association. The experiences that they
derive from each of these aspects of membership combine to create opportunities for personal growth. As a result, ESA
members are people who want to make a difference, who welcome challenges, and are gratified by personal involvement. They
are “people people” who enjoy working with others, and who are touched by the testimonials of others. They are
particularly interested in causes that affect families, particularly children. They respond readily to individuals and are
especially supportive of fellow members. Strong bonds of fellowship create positive, significant, and lasting friendships
for ESA members.
Virginia State Association Of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International was founded in Richmond, VA on September 19, 1953 and began
its story with friendship and service that has continued to grow and to thrive with each passing year in the Old Dominion.
In May 1973, the name of was changed to the Virginia State Council. The first
state president was Dorothy Gaithright from Alpha Eta in Richmond. She and the Virginia members wrote the bylaws and
standing rules, as well as set goals for the State Council. They also began to publish an official state newsletter
which continues to this day: The Lamplighter.
The first Virginia State Convention was held in Richmond
in 1954, followed by Roanoke in 1955 and Norfolk in 1956. The first International
Convention that was held in Virginia was in 1976 in Norfolk with the theme "Proudly We Hail". Norfolk is very
proud to once again host the International Convention in 2013.
Since ESA is primarily a philanthropic, educational, and
social organization, there continues to be a constant striving to fulfill all phases of the organization by the chapters throughout
the state. In addition to the business meetings and an educational program, all chapters sponsor philanthropic projects
in their communities as well as participate in state and international philanthropic projects. Additionally, socials are held
each month within the chapters so that members, their families and their friends can enjoy each others' company.
